STEAM Towards a Healthier World

Gavin Kendal-Freedman

Eastlake HS, WA

Junior (2019-2020)

Career Goals:

I want to pursue a career in applied math or chemistry and physics, because I want to continue to pursue my interests and still be able to innovate in the future.

What did you learn from this course?

I learned about a systems approach to medicine and biology, how symptoms are not always the same for different people, even with the same condition; P4 medicine, and how it personalizes medicine, makes it more proactive than reactive, and how it makes you participate more.

What advice do you have for future Ambassadors?

My advice to future ambassadors would be to enter the program with an open mind, and most importantly, don't be afraid to ask questions, remember - there are no stupid questions.

"Personalized Medicine 4 U"

Project Team Member: Lauren Sturgill

Who/What inspired this project?

I was inspired to explore P4 medicine after the presentation by George Haddad (Chief Medical Officer for P4 Medicine Institute). I believe that the current healthcare system in the US needs to be redone, so I created a 3D model of a P4 medical clinic that is based off the actual layout of the P4 Medicine Institute, and aligns with the patient experience from Lauren's story. I also added an additional music therapy room that I thought would be of benefit to patients participating in medical care that is predictive, preventive, and personalized.

How does your project communicate the relationship between the environment and health?

Our project communicates the relationship between health and the environment because it explores the aspects of daily life and how they impact your health, through the multifaceted tests used in P4 medicine to determine risks and health issues.

Who is your target audience?

Teens and young adults; they need preventive medicine more than any other age group because this is where they reach a stage in their life where they are allowed to make unhealthy decisions (such as smoking tobacco).  It is paramount that this age group go to a personalized medicine clinic to see their risk for major diseases and how to prevent it through diet and lifestyle. That way they will be more mindful about the choices they make throughout life.

As an Ambassador, how do you plan to share your message with your target audience?

I plan to share my message to my peers using social media to raise awareness of the project, and awareness of the systems approach to science, and ISB.
