Selin Filiz
Selin graduated from the International Community School in Kirkland as part of the Class of 2024. She is an aspiring molecular biologist and researcher focusing on environmentalism and synthetic biology and was a 2023 high school summer intern at ISB. Selin also enjoys creating short films, practicing photography, and reading books from her bottomless to-be-read list.
Originally completed in her high school AP Research class, Selin’s study sought to morphologically characterize and compare the composition of diatom communities in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) plastispheres in a freshwater environment over a period of five weeks. She designed a quasi-experiment to analyze biofilm richness and diatom diversity across these plastics.
