Program Accomplishments for Systems Education Experiences

Since 2003 we have been steadily working with teachers and students to help transfer STEM concepts and proficiencies from the lab to the classroom.  Here are a few notable accomplishments:

• Of our 72,000 website users:
  • • 80% access our curriculum modules in hundreds of schools, through thousands of teachers, across all 50 states and over 100 countries.  We estimate that approximately 2,500,000 students across this network have used our curriculum modules.
      • • The top states using our resources are WA, CA, NY, MA, OR.  In WA State, 79 school districts, which collectively have 66% of all public school district students in the state, have been or are involved
          with the SEE program. The CA Board of Education has integrated two of our curriculum modules (Intro to Systems and Ocean Acidification) into their 3-course science framework which is recommended for all high schools in CA, reaching an additional 1.8 million students per year.
      • • The top countries using our resources are US, India, UK, Canada, Portugal.
      • Our online curricular resources are accessed on average 2,000 times per month.
  • 20% access our web resources to learn about high school internships and to access internship related materials.
• Over 24,000 have watched our laboratory technique instructional videos for using a micropipette and hemocytometer.
• The majority of our lessons can be completed with classroom materials. When required, we can provide kits of materials.
  • 800 kits, complete with materials and cultures, have been provided to enable successful lab experiences.
• 2,000 is the minimum number of teachers who have been trained through our direct interactions and professional development institutes.
• 37 teachers have been trained through our onsite summer internships (many for multiple summers).
• 163 high school students have been trained through our summer internships, for more on their projects see their websites.  Each year, over 300 high school students apply for an internship position.  86% of these students are from groups considered underrepresented in STEM.
• While NSF provides the vast majority of our program financing, we have partnered with many organizations to make our program a success. Please see more at our Collaborations page.
