Systems Thinkers in STEM Ambassador – Environmental Stewardship

Hi! My name is Atalay Kerim Turkarslan, and I am a rising senior at Eastside Preparatory School and STiSA Ambassador. I am passionate about STEM, particularly the fields of computer science and marine biology.

For my project, I prepared a research paper about the systemic connection between riparian habitat health and marine biodiversity in the Puget Sound Region, focusing on killer whale and Chinook salmon populations and interactions. I was particularly interested in studying this after learning more about systems thinking in my 2025 ISB cohort and applying it to a topic I had learned about through my volunteer work with a local marine environmental restoration nonprofit. In this paper, I also discuss the importance of riparian restoration and conservation and discuss potential solutions to problems the region is facing.

In my free time, I like to hang out with my friends, code, play video games, practice Taekwondo, kayak, and volunteer.
